DEATH INVESTIGATION (SHOOTING)
May 08, 2014
The Liberty County Sheriff Dispatcher received a call at approximately 11:56pm Wednesday night regarding a shooting at #218 CR 175 near the Raywood area of East Liberty County. Responding Sgt. Joel Davila, Deputies Ranson Martel and Steven Rasberry found Spencer Allen Sharp, age 29 critically wounded from a 12 gauge shotgun wound to the upper torso. Sharp had managed to run to a home at #137 CR 175 before he collapsed. Liberty County EMS transported Sharp to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont where he expired at 5:24am this morning.
Lead Investigator, Sgt. Brian Bortz and Sgt. Chris Ungles interviewed the shooter, David Earl Mitchell, age 39 who told investigators that he and Sharp had known each other for about ten years and had roomed together until recently. According to Mitchell, he and Spencer Sharp were in disagreement over rent money and Sharp felt that Mitchell owed him money back on past rent they had shared. Mitchell also alleges that he knew Sharp always carried a gun with him and when Sharp showed up at Mitchell’s home, David Mitchell said he saw the butt of a hand gun sticking out of the pocket of Sharp’s trousers. Mitchell then picked up his shotgun as he alleges that Sharp made a move towards pulling the pistol from his pants pocket. Mitchell fired one shot, at close range, striking Sharp in the upper right side of his chest. An autopsy was ordered and will be conducted today.
Thus far, investigators have been unable to locate the hand gun that Sharp is alleged to have had when he was shot and at this point, no charges have been filed as the investigation is still on going.
