Fatal Car Crash on Hwy 61 of a Juvenile

At approximately 11:30pm last night, May 25th, the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department and D.P.S. responded to a one car fatal crash of a vehicle and a tree approximately one half mile inside the South county line on Hwy. 61.

The accident is being investigated by D.P.S. but the Sheriff’s Department on scene unit indicated that a vehicle driven by Ryan Birdwell of Devers, Texas had left the road way and struck a tree. Along with Birdwell in the vehicle were two Juvenile males. One reported to be 14 years old and the other 16 years old.

It was reported that the 14 year old male was airlifted by Life Flight to the hospital while the 16 year old male was deceased at the crash scene.

At 1:50am this date, Ryan Birdwell was booked into the Liberty County jail on two charges. One being Intoxicated Assault with a motor vehicle and a second charge of Intoxicated Manslaughter. At this time no bond has been set but Birdwell is expected to go before the Judge around 8:30 am this morning.

D.P.S. investigated the crash and will have further details on their investigation.
