IMPERSONATING A PEACE OFFICER & BURGLARY OF A HABITAT IN LIBERTY COUNTY

Apr 01, 2014

At around 7:40pm this evening, a resident and his family living on CR 2558 in the Snake River Sub Division were startled when a man dressed in a Liberty County Sheriff’s uniform suddenly walked through their unlocked door and began belligerently talking to the home owner. Without any explanation as to why he had walked into their home, unannounced, the man told the home owner, “….. you’re just as guilty for not reporting a crime as the person who commits the crime….”. The home owner had no idea what he was talking about as he had not reported any crime.

According to Sheriff’s Deputy Ivan Gonzalez who responded to the call, the home owner became suspicious of the uniformed man when he noticed that the Liberty County Sheriff’s uniform had no badge on the shirt and the fact the Sheriff’s Department has recently gone to a solid blue street uniform with the tan uniform shirts now only worn when a uniformed Deputy attends court. Although the uniformed man did not identify himself other than saying he was a Liberty County Deputy Sheriff, he was wearing a name tag with the name “J.J. Edwards” pinned to the short sleeve uniform shirt. There is no one by that name with the Sheriff’s Department.

This man only stayed a few minutes in the home when he left the scene in a newer model black Tahoe or similar vehicle with no emergency lights or law enforcement markings on the doors.

The subject was described by the home owner as a white male in his late 20’s or early 30’s, 5’-7” with an average build, clean shaven. Wearing a tan short sleeve Liberty County Sheriff’s Department uniform shirt with the correct shoulder patches on the shirt, black trousers and a gun belt with a weapon in the holster. No badge was on the shirt but a name tag with the name of “J.J. Edwards” was pinned over the right pocket.

Sheriff Bobby Rader is asking the public to be very cautious if they should encounter this impersonator and to report any contact that anyone may have had in the past with a subject who fits this description or circumstances to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department at (936) 336-4500. When this subject is arrested, he will be charged with Impersonating a Peace Officer and Burglary of a Habitat.
