Impersonating Police Officer - Alert

May 23, 2013

Liberty County:  The Sheriff’s Department is alerting the public about a male subject who may be posing as a law enforcement Officer and driving what could appear as an unmarked police vehicle.

On Monday evening, May 20, 2013, at approximately 9:pm, a female resident of Liberty County reported that she was pulled over by a black “sports car” looking vehicle which resembles a “Charger” automobile but was not confirmed as such. This vehicle did have flashing emergency lights with no obvious law enforcement  markings on the car, itself. This occurred on FM 2518 near the intersection of FM 2216 in mid-Liberty County.

After being stopped, the subject who was wearing a dark blue or black “uniform type” shirt leaned against the driver’s door of the female’s vehicle. It was noted that the “uniform shirt” did NOT have any type of shoulder patches on the sleeves and a name that was thought to be “Merlin” or some variation of that spelling was “sewed” on the left side of the shirt and UNDER the star shaped badge. It should be noted that NO law enforcement agency known to this department places the Officers name UNDER the badge but rather is a metal plate pinned on the RIGHT side of the shirt over the pocket flap.

The complainant reported that at one point the subject leaned over into her car and she paid particular attention to the badge the subject was wearing. She reported it was a six or seven pointed star badge with the wording of “Harris County Sheriff’s Dept.” on the badge. It should be noted that such a patrol uniform design shirt does NOT fit that worn by Harris County Deputy’s. While leaning into the victim’s vehicle, this subject made improper remarks. It was at this point that another passing vehicle slowed down and the suspect told the complainant she could leave which she did but she was unable to obtain a license plate number of the suspect’s vehicle.

It is suggested by this department that should a citizen be approached by such a vehicle and are unsure if it’s an authorized law enforcement vehicle or not that the citizen drive to a well lighted store, gas station, fire department or other area that is populated and try to obtain a license plate number if possible.

Sgt. Investigator Paul Lasco is conducting the investigation into this questionable traffic stop by this unknown subject and it is requested that if anyone has any information regarding this incident or, themselves, may have been stopped by this subject to please contact the Sheriff’s Department at (936) 336-4500.

Your identity will be kept confidential.
