LIBERTY COUNTY: A tragic family accident claimed the life of
an eighteen (18) month old baby boy as the family prepared to get into their
pickup truck just off FM 163 in mid-county to run some errands. At
approximately 5:00 pm April 17, 2013, the child and his father walked back into their
home to lock the doors while the mother backed the truck off the main drive way
onto the grassy lawn to make it easier for her husband and son to enter the
vehicle. Unknown to the father, his son apparently turned and walked back into
the front yard into the path of the truck being backed up by his mother where
the rear tires passed over the child. Liberty County EMS responded to the scene
and transported the child to the Cleveland Hospital ER where he was pronounced
deceased at 6:30pm by Justice of the Peace Judge Peggy Dunn.
As of this writing, some family members have not been
contacted therefore the names are being withheld pending full family
notification. Rex Evans, Chief of the Cleveland ISD and a close friend of the
family has been asked by the family to serve as the family spokesman.
Sgt. Investigator Kenny Dagle, lead investigator on this
accident, with assistance of the Department of Public Safety, arrived at the
scene and is conducting the investigation. No charges are expected to be filed.
Both mother and father are members of the Tarkington
Volunteer Fire Department and as expected of any such professional
organization, their fellow Fire Fighters have come together as a “family” to fully support the
parents in this time of tragedy and extreme grief.
